Lex Young, a junior at Newbury Park High in California, produced the junior class national record and achieved the No. 2 performance in U.S. prep history in the 5,000 meters by finishing fifth in his section in 13:43.95 at the Sound Running Track Meet at JSerra High in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. Young smashed the previous junior mark of 14:11.2 established in 1979 by Josh Zishka of Lancaster, Ohio. Only Galen Rupp of Central Catholic OR, who clocked 13:37.91 in the summer after graduating in 2004, has run faster as a high school athlete than Young.
